    原为沙逊大厦，由当时上海大房地产商英籍犹太人沙逊投资建造，是上海第一幢层数超过10层的大楼。公和洋行设计，1926～1929年华商新仁记营造厂承建，钢框架结构。典型的装饰艺术派风格。
    大厦高10层，局部13层，有地下室，总高77米。平面呈A形，立面以竖线条构图为主，檐部和基座线脚等采用抽象几何装饰。东部设高19米的绿色金字塔形铜顶，四方攒尖顶，坡度陡，用紫铜皮饰面。
    大楼从外墙装饰纹样到室内装饰，均有风格统一而又十分精美的设计。室内大理石地面、墙面拼花图案、栏杆、天花、灯具等也为装饰艺术派风格。底层有两条通道交叉，一条从外滩进入，一条从南京路通至滇池路，中间交汇点有一个八角亭式内厅，其穹顶有彩色玻璃镶嵌的图案。整个大楼内设计巧妙，利用合理。底层大厅内，做工精致的拱形平顶吊灯、平顶天花、券式拱门，气派十足。和平厅是典型的英国古典宫廷式建筑，是饭店中面积最大的宴会厅。1998年10月，著名的汪辜会谈就是在这里举行的。 大楼以其造价之高、设计之先进、设备之豪华，在20世纪30年代就赢得了“远东第一楼”的称号。如今，人们仍然可以从各处细部，如彩色玻璃门窗、穹顶、镂空吊灯、木质护板、拉手、饰品等等，充分体味建筑的美感。
    Former Sassoon House. Designed by Palmer & Turner, Architects and Surveyors. Constructed by Sin Jin Kee & Co, built in 1926-1929. Steel frame structure. Art Deco style.
    Geometrical decorations for the eaves and base moldings. A 19-meter-high green pyramid-type copper tower on the eastern end. Vertical line design is the main tone for the facade.
    Art Deco features adopted for the details inside like marble ground, wall-patterns and ceiling etc. There are 2 entrances on the 1st floor. And the portico at the intersection has a beautiful dome made of colored glass. The whole building shows a good example architecturally by its ingenious scheme. Exquisite fitments showing grand style of the lobbies on the 1st floor. The Peace Hall, the largest one among all restaurants in this hotel, is full of an English classical palace style. It is here that the famous “”Wang-Koo Talks”” was held in October 1998. Owning the reputation of The First Hotel in Far East for its high cost in construction and advanced equipment in 1930s, the building continues to emit its permanent charm to the world.

人文历史
    建筑落成后，大楼4层以下全部被用作办公楼出租或自用（沙逊洋行及部分下属公司在4楼办公）。5至9层为华懋饭店，其中5层的特色套房布置分德国、印度、西班牙等风格，6层为法、意、美式，7层则为中、英式，8层有大酒吧、舞厅和中国式的餐厅，之上还设有夜总会、小餐厅以及维克多•沙逊的英国式住宅，精美豪华。金字塔式的顶内，还有个大餐厅。 上海解放后，市财政经济委员会曾在内办公。1952年大厦由上海市人民政府接管，1956年恢复饭店业务，改名为和平饭店。1992年世界饭店组织将和平饭店列为世界著名饭店之一，中国仅此一家获此殊荣。
